82% of patients are unaware of the possibility of using their own blood in surgery.

The use of blood banks in surgeries is a widely used technique all over the world. Although it is a solution that helps to save many lives, there is a still littleknown technique, with even safer results and good costbenefit: intraoperative recovery autotransfusion of the patient‘s own blood.

A survey conducted at the end of 2020 reveals that 82% of Brazilians are unaware of the possibility of using their own blood if they need to undergo a transfusion. The vast majority, 90% of the respondents, believe that donated blood is safe.

The survey, conducted by LivaNova, also found that more than 60% of the respondents were unaware of the immunological window, the period in which the test carried out in the blood centers cannot identify some diseases, thus creating the possibility of infection of the recipient. Although the autotransfusion technique is not new, most of the population is unaware of its benefits to health and has no idea of its cost.

The technique consists of recovering the patient‘s blood, which would be lost during surgery, passing through a filtration and removal of any impurities. The process is carried out by automated equipment, which aspirate the blood from the surgical field, recover the erythrocytes (most important component of the blood). After that, clean and completely safe, the blood is reinfused into the patient. Thus, problems arising from blood transfusion, such as contamination and/or rejection, are practically eliminated, since the patient is receiving his own blood. Reports from patients confirm that the experience is very positive, and that the use of technology was decisive for their rapid recovery.
