5 Adverse Reactions During Blood Transfusions

Hemolytic Reactions: These are reactions in which the patient’s immune system attacks and destroys the transfused red blood cells. This can occur due to blood incompatibility or human error.

Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop allergies to blood components, such as proteins or preservatives. This can lead to symptoms such as itching, rashes, shortness of breath, and even anaphylactic shock.

Febrile Reactions: Often, a blood transfusion can cause a fever, which is an inflammatory response of the body. This may be accompanied by chills and discomfort.

Iron Overload: Repeated blood transfusion can result in an excessive accumulation of iron in the body, leading to organ damage.

Transmission of Infections: Although stringent screening protocols have reduced the risk, there is still the possibility of transmitting infectious diseases through transfused blood.
