What is Cholecystectomy and when is it indicated?

Colecystectomy is a surgical intervention that aims to remove the gallbladder (organ near the liver). The gallbladder has the function of aiding in the digestion of fats, where we can also find bile (liquid produced by the liver and sent to the intestine). Surgery is one of the main procedures indicated to treat cholelithiasis and also cholecystitis. Having as an indication for removal of the gallbladder the general picture of the patient, who must present calculi in the gallbladder either of chronic or acute order. In addition, they must also present acalculous cholecystitis and biliary colic. The recommendations, however, must also consider:

  • If there are previous complications such as a history of cholecystitis, pancreatitis and biliary fistula, among others;
  • Presence of pains that interfere with the routine and quality of life of patients;
  • Conditions that may pose risks of complications for the individual.
